Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a bridge replacement project, along State Route (SR) 23 at the Jenkins/Burke County line (Beaverdam Creek), proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The survey was performed in a broad corridor in advance of actual bridge plans and located two previously undiscovered archeological sites, 9JS55 and 9BK412. Both of these sites extend beyond the surveyed project corridor, so their NRHP eligibility remains unknown. However, potentially significant deposits were identified at each site, in the parts of each site north of SR 23 and nearest Beaverdam Creek. On March 16, 2004 a project concept report was approved that would avoid the northern side of the surveyed corridor. Preliminary plans show a temporary detour to the south of the existing bridge. On this basis we recommend that the parts of each site north of SR 23 will be avoided during project implementation, ensuring that there will be no adverse effects to significant archeological resources as a result of the proposed project.
