Abstract

Literature and Records Search: A review of pertinent NRHP listed or eligible properties revealed that no NRHP properties, previously recorded archeological sites, or state-recognized structures are in or adjacent to the project area. Several structural signatures were noted on historic maps dating from 1920 to 1951, and aerial photographs from 1938, 1949, and 1972. Archeological Survey: Two historic house sites (9WK99 and 9WK100), one historic artifact scatter with a prehistoric isolate (9WK102), one multicomponent prehistoric campsite (9WK103), two low density lithic scatters (Site 9WK101 and IF-2), and one historic isolate (IF-1) were recorded during the survey. Components recognized include Unknown Prehistoric, Late Archaic, Early-Middle Woodland, Mississippian, 19th century, Late 190' /Early 200' century, and Late 190' -Late 20th century. Archeological Testing: Following the survey, Site 9WK103, the large multi-component camp site, was tested. Survey data had indicated the possibility of intact cultural deposits. Three test units were excavated yielding evidence that the site had been occupied in the Late Archaic, Early-Middle Woodland, Middle-Late Woodland, and Late Mississippian periods. Although some areas of the site had been disturbed by sivilcultural practices, there was indication of partially intact stratified deposits, particularly for the Late Archaic and pre-ceramic zones. Architectural Survey: Five structures/structural complexes (S-1 though S-5) and one historic railroad bed were recorded within the project APE. S-1 is a ca. 1900 hall-and-parlor house and outbuildings associated with Site 9WK99. The house has been significantly modified and the former farm complex is now surrounded by pine plantation. S-2 is the remains of a burned house which was also recorded as Site 9WK100. S-3 is an early 200i century hall-and-parlor house with no distinguishing elements. The structure is surrounded by pine plantation. S-4 and S-5 are houses that been modified through partial removal.
