Abstract

A phase I archaeological survey was conducted on a 29.1 hectares (71.8 acres) tract in Wayne County for the development of an industrial park. This project was conducted on behalf of Statewide Engineering. The project area is located 3.3 km. (2 miles) southwest of the City of Jesup southwest of Sunset Boulevard. The floodplain of Mosely Creek forms the western boundaries of the irregularly-shaped tract while Macon Street marks the southeast boundary. The northeast boundary is formed by a dirt road. The elevation of the project area ranges from 26m. to 32m. (85 ft. to 106 ft.). Cypress Cultural Consultants identified only one isolated find during the field survey. The isolated find consisted of 2 pieces of plain undecorated shell-tempered ceramic sherds likely originating from the same vessel. Considering the proximity of the location to the floodplain of Mosely Creek, the presence of cultural material is not surprising. However, no additional artifacts were identified in the subsurface or on the surrounding ground surface. The artifacts may have originated from a site that may exist northeast of the project area. No archaeological sites were identified during the project. No archaeological sites were recorded during the current archaeological survey. Thus, no archaeological sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places were identified during the project. Cypress Cultural Consultants recommends that the Great Southern Wood Preserving Wayne County Industrial Park project be allowed to proceed within the defined project boundaries.
