Abstract

The surface collection of the 125-acre Scull Shoals tract in northern Greene County produced 19 previously unrecorded sites and added additional information to three sites previously recorded by the University of Georgia in 1997. The majority of the sites are Archaic and Late Mississippian period. One possible historic house site was discovered. No Paleoindian or Woodland period sites were recorded during the course of this survey. The objective of this survey is to add further archaeological research to the extensively surveyed Oconee River Valley and interpret the data in a way that may shed light on the settlement patterns of the prehistoric people of the Oconee River Valley.
