Abstract

On June 18, 2004, staff from Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) revisited the location of a proposed bridge replacement project in eastern Meriwether County, Georgia. (Figure 1). The bridge is located on State Route 74 and 85 (SR 74/85) and crosses Red Oak Creek. The purpose of this revisit was to assess the effects of changes to the original project design on archaeological resources identified and examined during the intensive Phase I survey (Patton 2002). This addendum describes the results of the revisit and offers recommendations regarding the impact of the redesign on previously identified archaeological resources. New plans for the project include four design changes. The plans now show an existing 10-foot Bell South easement, which was added to the plans from Station 99 + 35 to Station 107 + 10 and from Station 126 + 40 to Station 131 + 98.95. An additional 10 ft of required ROW has been added on the east side of the road, from Station 107 + 10 to Station 126 + 40. In addition, originally the Project End was at Station 130 + 00. It now ends at Station 131+98.95. Finally, the driveway construction easement originally located at Station 106 + 47 and measuring 10 ft east-west by 20 ft north-south has been expanded to 10 ft east-west by 40 ft north-south. It will now begin at Station 106 + 40. In the following chapter, the methods used to assess the effect of these project changes on archaeological resources in the APE are described. The final chapter of this addendum discusses the results of the revisit and recommendations for the project. Based on the results of the revisit, EPEI recommends that no additional archaeological investigations are necessary in the redesigned APE for this project and recommends clearance for construction.
