Abstract

Under contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological resources survey (Phase I) within the approximate 9.7 km (6 mi) proposed reroute corridor sections along US Highway 441 (US 441) in Pearson, Georgia (Atkinson County), and in Clinch County, Georgia, on 8-12 April 2002 and on 1721 June 2002. Background research and field survey were conducted to provide accurate and reliable location of archaeological sites in the project area, provide an evaluation of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for all identified archaeological resources, and provide recommendations for mitigation if avoidance is not possible. This survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (1992, as amended). The field survey consisted of the excavation of shovel tests at 30 meter (100 ft) intervals along transects (one transect for every 30 meters [100 ft] of corridor width) spaced at 30 meters (100 ft) traversing the length of the proposed reroute corridors. Visual surface inspection was conducted in lieu of shovel testing in areas that were extremely disturbed and possessed good surface visibility. Shovel tests were not excavated in areas that were extremely sloped, wet, or disturbed. The field survey resulted in the identification of one surface isolated find (Isolate 25) and one subsurface isolated find (Isolate 26). These isolates do not meet the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria and are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Brockington and Associates, Inc., found no significant archaeological resources within the area of potential effect (APE) of the project corridor. Archaeological clearance for the proposed US 441 reroute corridor is recommended.
