Abstract

In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, and the Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) of 1979, staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted an archaeological survey for a proposed bridge replacement on SR 43/US 378 over Clark Hill Reservoir in Lincoln County, Georgia and McCormick County, South Carolina. One new archaeological site was identified within the proposed project's area of potential effect (APE). Site 9LC1061 is located entirely within existing GDOT right-of-way on the north side of SR 43/US 378, approximately 150 meters south of the existing bridge. Based on the extremely limited artifact assemblage, lack of research potential, and questionable context, this site is considered not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Therefore, we conclude that no significant archaeological resources will be affected by implementation of the proposed project. No further archaeological work is recommended.
