Abstract

In September 1996, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted archaeological investigations of an approximately nine acre tract on the eastside downtown Savannah riverfront area known as Wharf Lots 3, 4, 5, and 6 in Lamar Ward. The present study includes investigations of an adjacent 11 acre tract, located immediately south of the Wharf lots between Saint Julian and East President Streets (Figure 1). The nine acre tract fronts on the south bank of the Savannah River, just east of the Marriott Hotel. The proposed development at the project tract is construction of a Savannah Trade Center. Since a bulkhead in the waterfront area is necessary for developing the tract, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit is required. As part of the permitting process, an archaeological survey is needed to identify "significant cultural resources" which could be adversely affected by the undertaking. No buildings are present within the project tract, although foundations from late nineteenth/early twentieth century warehouses are visible.
