Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1999 for the proposed Multipurpose Range Complex on the Fort Benning Military Reservation. The study area encompassed land management compartments D-01, D-02, D-03, and K-23, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 1,106 acres (448 ha) was examined. A total of 34 archaeological loci (26 sites and eight isolated finds) was identified in the Multi-Purpose Range (Compartments D-01, D-02, D-03, and K-23). Three previously recorded loci also were revisited by the Southern Research team. Other previously recorded sites, which include two sites deemed eligible for listing in the NRHP and six deemed potentially eligible, were not revisited by the present survey team because these sites were located in areas that were considered previously surveyed. In total, 21 sites in the four study compartments may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and two sites are considered eligible for listing.
