Abstract

Panamerican Consultants, Inc., archaeologically surveyed 436.9 hectares (ha) (1,079 acres [ac]) within Ft. Benning Military Reservation where it exists in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The fieldwork took place between August 10 and September 17, 1993. The goal of the survey was to make a complete inventory of all cultural resources in management Compartment Q-2. In the eastern part of the reservation, this compartment is in an area south of U.S. Highway 280, north of Oswichee Creek, and approximately 4 kilometers (km) northwest of modern-day Cusseta, Georgia. The survey scope of work called for intensive pedestrian coverage linked to 30-meter (m) shovel test intervals along parallel transects also spaced 30 m apart. A total of 1,338 shovel test locations were documented. Of this number, 850 shovel tests were excavated, including 84 shovel tests that produced cultural materials and 766 shovel tests with negative results. There were 488 documented shovel test locations where excavation was inappropriate due to standing water, extreme slope, or subsoil at ground surface. A total volume of 17.20 cubic m (m') is estimated to have been excavated by shovel testing. The survey produced 34 archaeological sites and 10 isolated finds. No sites had been previously documented in the survey area. Of the archaeological sites, 6 are historic, 22 have both prehistoric and historic materials, and 6 have only prehistoric materials. Included in the count of historic sites were Reese Cemetery (9Ce522) and a possible abandoned cemetery (9Ce554). Prehistoric evidence among the sites spans the Late Archaic period through Late Woodland times. Historic sites tend to be minimal scatters of African/Euro-American homesites occupied in the 1800s or early 1900s. The historic sites are now heavily impacted and without standing structures. No sites are recommended clearly eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Nine sites are recommended potentially eligible for listing in the NRHP: 9Ce524 (historic, prehistoric) 9Ce527 (historic), 9Ce530 (prehistoric, historic), 9Ce541 (historic, prehistoric), 9Ce542 (historic, prehistoric), 9Ce543 (prehistoric, historic), 9Ce544 (prehistoric), 9Ce550 (historic, prehistoric), and 9Ce552 (prehistoric, historic). Twenty-three sites are recommended ineligible for listing in the NRHP. Two sites were historic cemeteries for which no NRHP recommendations are made. No isolated finds are recommended eligible or potentially eligible for listing in the NRHP.
