Abstract

Panamerican Consultants, Inc., archaeologically surveyed 283.4 hectares (ha), or 700 acres (ac), within Ft. Benning Military Reservation where it exists in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The fieldwork took place between January 31 and February 16, 1994. The goal of the survey was to make a complete inventory of all cultural resources in Management Compartment A-9. Located in the southwestern part of the reservation, this compartment is in an area approximately 2.6 kilometers (km) southwest of U.S. Highway 280, 1 km north of Oswichee Creek, and 6.4 km west-northwest of modern-day Cusseta, Georgia. The survey resulted in 32 newly recorded archaeological sites and 18 isolated finds. One site (9Ce57) had been previously documented in the survey area. Of the newly recorded archaeological sites, 12 are historic, 10 have both prehistoric and historic materials, and 10 have only prehistoric materials. Included in this count are two historic cemeteries. Prehistoric evidence among the sites spans the Early Archaic period through Mississippian times. Historic sites tend to be minimal scatters of Afro/Euro-American home sites occupied in the 1800s or early 1900s. The historic sites are now heavily impacted and have no standing structures.
