Abstract

On 17 June 1997, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed Yankee Road distribution line corridor in Compartments Q-3 and Q-5 of the Fort Benning Military Reservation, Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The proposed distribution line will provide power to a Fort Benning Ranger training complex from a transmission line connection near the intersection of U.S. 27/280 and State Route 26. The survey was conducted in accordance with the Historic Preservation Plan for the Cultural Resources at Fort Benning Military Reservation. The archaeological survey consisted of background research and field survey of the proposed corridor. The proposed corridor is composed of two segments. Segment A follows Old Cusseta Road from its intersection with U.S. 27/280 north to its intersection with Yankee Road and has been previously surveyed by Southeastern Archaeological Services, Inc. Segment B includes both sides of Yankee Road from its intersection with Old Cusseta Road west to the Ranger training complex and has not been previously surveyed. This segment is approximately 1.1 kilometer (0.7 mile) long and 60 meters (200 feet) wide. Archaeological field survey consisted of shovel test excavation every 30 meters (100 feet) in Segment B. Approximately 70 shovel tests were excavated along Yankee Road. This segment has been extremely disturbed by erosion and logging practices. Field survey identified no archaeological sites within the proposed corridor. No historic resources will be impacted by the project, and no further work is recommended in the proposed corridor.
