Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of 350 acres in Compartment M7 at the Fort Benning Military Reservation (Muscogee County, Georgia) during late February and early March 1994. The tract is proposed for transfer to the Consolidated Government of Columbus/Muscogee County as part of a larger land exchange with Fort Benning. The Consolidated Government of Columbus/Muscogee County proposes use of the survey tract as a landfill. Cultural resources survey of the landfill tract resulted in the location and delineation of ten archaeological sites (9ME112, 9ME113, 9ME114, 9ME165, 9ME167, 9ME168, 9ME169, 9ME322, 9ME332, and 9ME384) and six isolated finds of cultural material (Table 1). Isolated finds are considered ineligible for the NRHP. All of the archaeological sites recorded within the landfill tract are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Archaeological site recording and archival research have contributed to our knowledge of Late Archaic period settlement and lithic technology, and local middle nineteenth through middle twentieth century lifeways. These sites have been adversely impacted by past land use and erosion such that they exhibit no additional archaeological research potential. No further cultural resource investigations are recommended at these locations, and cultural resources clearance to proceed with proposed landfill development is recommended.
