Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research in 1998 and 1999 in land management Compartment 0-01, which is located in Muscogee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. A total of 740 acres (300 ha) was examined in the present study. Previous archaeological survey was conducted on 12 acres in the study compartment and one site was identified as a result (W. Dean Wood, cited in Elliott and Stoops 1985). A total of 27 archaeological loci (15 sites and 12 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment 0-01. Four sites in this compartment may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
