Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management compartment J-06, which is located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment J-06 contains 683 acres (277 ha), of which two acres (1 ha) were previously surveyed for archaeological sites and 681 acres (276 ha) were examined in the present study. A total of 21 archaeological loci (17 sites and 4 isolated finds) was identified. Two of these sites (9Ce63 and 9Ce967) were previously recorded. Geomorphic study in this compartment yielded two important radiometric dates, including one for an abandoned channel of Upatoi Creek and one from beneath an upland sand dune. Eight sites in this compartment may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
