Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to early 2000 in land management Compartment X-05, which is located in Russell County, Alabama. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment X-05 contains a total of 57 archaeological loci (50 sites and 7 isolated finds). Sixteen sites were previously recorded in the compartment. Of these, 10 were revisited in the present study. Thirty-three sites in this compartment are either considered eligible (n=4) or potentially eligible (n=29) for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites. The remaining 24 cultural resources in Compartment X-05 (17 sites and 7 isolated finds) are considered ineligible for listing and warrant no further work.
