Abstract

In August 2005, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) performed an intensive cultural resource assessment survey to evaluate potential impacts to historic properties in conjunction with the Section 404 permitting process and in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This work was performed on behalf of Waterfront Group Georgia, LLC. As a result of the survey four new archaeological sites (9CM282-9CM285) and three isolated finds were discovered. One site, 9CM284, was determined to be potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). As a result, archaeological testing was conducted in August and September 2005 at 9CM284. Four excavation units were placed near previously recorded shovel tests and surface scatters that yielded relatively high counts of prehistoric artifacts, dating to the Late Archaic, Middle and Late Woodland, and Middle Mississippian periods. Testing revealed limited artifacts in expected areas of concentration, as well as extensive disturbance to site contexts resulting from timbering and silvicultural and road maintenance activities. As a result, 9CM284 is considered not eligible for NRHP inclusion, and does not warrant any further archaeological work.
