Abstract

In September and October of 2005 New South Associates conducted an archaeological survey as part of a cultural resource assessment (CRA) for the proposed relocation of the executive office and general operating functions of the Macon/Bibb County Transit Authority (MTA) to the Macon Terminal Station. The CRA was conducted as part of the larger environmental assessment (EA). The project area of concern to the archaeologist consisted of approximately 3.5 acres, located southeast from the existing Macon Terminal Station building, constructed in 1916. Two properties were investigated by the archaeologist for archaeological resources. Area 1 was the property directly adjacent to the Macon Terminal Station, predominately consisting of an asphalt paved parking area utilized by the Macon Police Department. Area 2 (The Causey property) is located between Plum and Poplar Streets, east of Fifth Street. Archaeological survey and historic research indicates that Area 1 has the potential to contain undiscovered prehistoric or historic deposits, and additional survey level study, through mechanical trenching and stripping is recommended. Area 2 appears to have little archaeological potential, and no additional study is recommended.
