New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two road corridors along Buford Highway/SR 20 between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Samples Road Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties, Georgia. The project totaled approximately 6.8 miles and featured 200 feet of right-of-way, 100 feet on either side of the centerline. The first portion of survey corridor, a total of 3.8 miles, was located in Gwinnett County from the intersection of Buford Highway/SR 20 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to the Chattahoochee River, and the second section extended from the Chattahoochee River to Samples Road, a total of 3 miles into Forsyth County. Numerous previously recorded sites and archaeological projects fall within a one-mile radius of the project corridors. During the current survey, two isolated finds were discovered and the limits of one previously recorded site were redefined within project corridor. Site 9FO247 originally discovered just north of the Buford Highway/SR 20 bridge at the Chattahoochee, has been found to extend south across Buford Highway/SR 20. While there is some impact of road/bridge construction in the area, Site 9FO247 contained intact soils possessing artifacts within the proposed 100-foot right-of-way. Given the diagnostic nature of the artifacts recovered within the proposed right-of-way, testing of the site is recommended to determine the nature and extent of the cultural material and assess the area for the preservation of subsurface features. The site is recommended potentially eligible for NHRP.
