Abstract

The project consists of improvements to the intersection of Salem Road (SR 162) and Spring Road (CR 33) located in the extreme western portion of Newton County. The main part of the project will involve the realignment of a portion of Spring Road to create a perpendicular intersection with Salem Road, and the addition of turn lanes and sidewalks on the west side (southbound lane) of Salem Road. The realigned portion of Spring Road will intersect Salem Road approximately 140 ft (42 m) north of the existing intersection. Total length of the realignment will be about 700 ft (210 m). The right-of-way for the new alignment of Spring Road will be 100 ft (33 m) wide and the new construction easements along Spring Road and Salem Road will vary from 10 - 45 ft (3 - 15 m) wide. The survey was conducted by Ron Schoettmer and Gail Tomczak on February 13, 2006. Exposed ground surfaces were visually inspected and 30 cm diameter screened shovel tests were excavated within the proposed new right-of-way of Spring Road and within construction easements on Salem Campground Road. Five shovel tests were placed along the west side of Salem Road and seven were excavated within the proposed new right-of-way of Spring Road. No archeological sites or isolated artifacts were found.
