Abstract

This is an Archaeological Reassessment of GDOT Project IM-NH-20-1(73) in Douglas County. The proposed project would improve the interchange at SR 92/Fairburn Road and I-20 by adding a 20' raised median from the I-20 Westbound ramps to South Cherokee Boulevard. The project would begin approximately 492' south of the I-20 Eastbound ramps and end approximately 500' north at Pine Drive. Left turn lanes would be added at South Cherokee Boulevard and Vansant/Shawnee Trail. Slater Mill Road and Westmoreland Plaza would both be realigned. The project has recently been changed to include temporary easements at various locations, the placement of rip rap, and additions and removal of minor amounts of required right-of-way. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
