Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the reconstruction of the SR 5/SR 16/US 27 Alt intersection in the City of Whitesburg in Carroll County, Georgia. In addition, a new location segment would be added to improve the SR 5/Kelly Street intersection. The new location segment is located approximately 500 feet west of the SR 5/SR 16/US 27 Alt intersection. The new location section will require 90x100 feet of right-of-way. The existing right-of-way on SR 16/SR 27 Alt is 60 feet. The required right-of-way for SR 16/SR 27 Alt varies with a maximum of approximately 90 feet total. The existing right-of-way for SR 5 is 100 feet. The required right-of-way for SR 5 is 10 additional feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
