Abstract

This is an Archaeological Reassessment of GDOT Project STP-2928(l) in Troup County. The proposed project would widen and reconstruct SR 14/US 29 from 0.16 mile west of West Meadow Drive to SR 14 Spur in Troup County. SR 14/US 29 is a rural two lane road with 4 foot grassed shoulders. The proposed project would consist of two 12 foot travel lanes, a 14 foot center turn lane, and curb-and gutter. Existing right-of-way is approximately 60 feet. Approximately 40 feet of additional right-of-way will be required. Total length of the project is approximately 0.79 mile. Since the time of the original survey the project has been changed to include guardrails at selected locations and the addition of driveway easements. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
