Abstract

Fort Yargo State Park, located south of Winder in Barrow County, Georgia, has extensive trail networks designed to accommodate hikers and cyclists. Some segments of the trail network were intended to serve both user groups, but recent conflicts have demonstrated a need to keep them separated. Park Manager Eric Bentley contacted the Office of the State Archaeologist to schedule an archaeological assessment of a new section of trail (Figure 1). The new trail corridor, approximately 1.4 km in length, was marked with survey tape prior to the survey. The trail runs parallel to the pipeline corridor that passes through the park. The survey was conducted on April 3, 2006 by Staff Archaeologist Ronnie Rogers using a combination of shovel tests and visual inspection. One archaeological resource, a historic house site, was recorded by the survey. The proposed trail avoids the site and will have no effect on it. The proposed trail will have no effect on significant archaeological resources and no further investigation is recommended for this project.
