Abstract

In June, 2006 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of the proposed 2.5 ha (6.2 ac) Milton230/25/12 kV substation in northern Fulton County. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archeological sites within the area of potential effect for the proposed project (the construction of the substation), so that potential effects to those resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The survey was conducted for the Georgia Transmission Corporation through the firm of Jordan, Jones and Goulding, Inc. The project area consists mainly of agriculturally terraced pasture centered on a swale and a ca.1940s house and modern barn complex, and consequently was composed largely of grassy ridge slope. However, the grass cover was sparse and surface exposure was fair to good throughout. A total of eight shovel tests were excavated. No archeological sites or artifacts were located. No archeological material was found associated with the approximately 60-year-old house or the newer barns. Because no significant cultural resources are present, we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed.
