Abstract

This report summarizes the results of an archaeological survey of the proposed Gwinnett Neighborhood Park for the Department of Community Development, City of Augusta, Georgia. The area surveyed consists of approximately eight acres including one city block bounded by Ninth Street on the west, D'Antignac Street on the north, Eighth Street on the east, and Adams Street on the south. A small lot south of Adams Street and another small lot east of Eighth Street complete the areas examined for this study. The field survey was conducted by University of Georgia archaeologists Marvin T. Smith, Charles M. Haecker, Mark Williams, and Marshall Williams. Field work was conducted December 8-10, 1976, and analysis was completed the following week. Dr. Paul Fish and Dr. David J. Hally acted as Co-Principal Investigators for this project. The primary purpose of this report is to provide an archaeological evaluation of the proposed park area in terms of criteria established by the National Register of Historic Places in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Executive Order 11593, and the Advisory Council's Procedures for the Protection of Historic and Cultural Properties.
