Abstract

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests recently completed a survey of 68 acres for a proposed commercial harvest on the Oconee Ranger District in Jasper, Putnam, and Greene Counties. This project is designed to restore upland oak habitat to meet Forest Plan standards. Proposed stands in Compartments 198 and 164 were previously surveyed. Two unevaluated sites were determined to be located in the project area in Compartment 164 and this stand was dropped from the project. No sites were present in Compartment 198. The fieldwork in Compartments 104, 111, 141, and 184 involved intensive archeological survey of the proposed project area to identify and evaluate heritage resources, and to assess project effects on recorded properties. Fieldwork was completed between July 2005 and April 2006 and five previously unreported archeological sites (9GE2389, 9JA462, 9JA461, 9PM1563, 9PM1564) were recorded (Table 1). Four of the five sites were determined to be ineligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These sites include: two that represent collections of rock piles dating to the nineteenth or twentieth centuries, a historic site of unknown function, and a prehistoric lithic scatter that dates to the Middle Archaic period. One site, a twentieth century farmstead has not been evaluated to determine eligibility for the NRHP and will be protected from timber harvest related activities.
