Abstract

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are preparing timber harvests in several compartments on the Oconee Ranger District in Jones County. Monitoring was conducted of: a) sites located in these sale areas that have been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); or b) sites with an undetermined status in regards to the NRHP. Fieldwork was conducted between August 2005 and August 2006 and a total of 14 sites were revisited (Table 1). No adverse effects appear to have occurred to these sites since they were originally recorded and protective measures that have been implemented appear to be adequate with the exception of a single site. The High-Low site had been inaccurately plotted on maps provided to the Forester and was not excluded from proposed timber harvest areas that had already been painted. Test excavations were carried out at this site to determine its eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These investigations found that the site was indeed eligible for the NRHP and a 30 m buffer was placed around the site to protect it from harvest activities.
