Abstract

Archaeological Assessment of Projects RWSTP-0008-00(365) & SPROO-0005-00(976), Grady and Thomas Counties. Projects RWSTP-0008-00(365) & SPROO-0005-00(976) would consist of stream restoration at three bridges in Grady and Thomas Counties. The first bridge is located on Barnett's Creek on SR 188. Two permanent easements are required for the restoration work. The first easement on the north side of SR 188 is 100 x 150 feet, the second easement, on the south side of the road, is 250 x 75 feet. The second bridge is located on the west branch of Barnett's Creek on SR 188. One permanent easement, on the south side of SR 188 is required. This easement is 325 x 175 feet. The third bridge is located on Turkey Creek on SR 111. Two permanent easements are required for stream restoration adjacent to Turkey Creek. The first easement is located on the west side of SR 111 and is 50 x 50 feet. The second easement, located on the west side of SR 111, is 100 x 100 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
