Abstract

The purpose of this project was to conduct a cultural resource survey of the proposed Phase III expansion of the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Fulton County, Georgia near the City of Roswell. The research and field investigations were conducted under the provisions of a contract between Soil Systems, Inc. and the Fulton County Department of Planning and Community Development. The fieldwork was completed in March, 1981. The literature and records search was conducted using the resources of Georgia State University Library, Emory University, the state site files located at the University of Georgia, and data provided to the Fulton County Planning Department by the Southeast Archaeological Center of the Department of the Interior. The results of these investigations are detailed in Chapters III and IV of this report.

The study area consists of three separate parcels located adjacent to the existing Chattahoochee Nature Center in Fulton County, Georgia (Figure 1). These parcels total approximately 16 acres in area, and mainly include moderate to steep hill slopes as well as a part of an artificial lake. The entire project area is located in a pine and hardwood forest and has been impacted by farming and the construction of the artificial lake.

The archaeological survey was limited to areas defined by project plat maps provided by the Fulton County Planning Department. The field survey was completed using both reconnaissance and subsurface techniques, and the results of the survey are reported in Chapter IV.
