Abstract

Management Summary: During October 2006, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed location for the SR 52 over Candler Creek bridge replacement project. The project is located on SR 52 at the crossing of Candler Creek in Hall County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Street Smarts, Inc. A review of the state site files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that there are no previously identified archaeological sites within a one km radius of the project area. During the course of the current investigations, one archaeological site, 9HL518 was identified. Site 9HL518 is the ruins of an early twentieth century bridge that was mostly removed when the current bridge was constructed. Due to its low research potential, 9HL518 is recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No further work is necessary at its location and clearance for construction is recommended for the project's APE.
