Abstract

PBS&J plans to construct pedestrian improvements along Buford Highway beginning at the Fulton-Dekalb County line and extending northeast along the highway, ending at the intersection with Shallowford Terrace. New sidewalks will be constructed along both sides of the highway with the width being a minimum of 5 ft.(1.52m) and a maximum of 10 ft. (3.05m). Pedestrian lighting will also be included. Five new traffic signals will be installed at Sam's Hill Ln., West Druid Hills Rd., the driveway of Highland North Apts., Drew Valley Rd. and Shallowford Terrace. Pedestrian crossing islands will be constructed at three intervals between Clairmont Rd. and Shallowford Terrace. The islands will be push-button activated and will warn motorists by overhead blinking caution lights and in-pavement LED lights. South of Clairmont Rd. to the county line the continuous two way left turn lane will be converted to a raised median that includes six additional pedestrian crossing islands. The proposed undertaking will impact selected areas on both sides of Buford Highway within the 4.8-mile (7.72 km) corridor. The width of the project corridor varies, but the maximum width of the Area of Potential Effect is 60 ft. (18.29m) from the edge of existing right-of-way. Most of the impact will be within the existing sidewalk footprint. The majority of the project will be constructed on existing right-of-way, but small parcels of new right-of-way will be acquired for this project mainly as easements for the construction of slopes.
