Abstract

Project STP-0004-00(166) Fulton County is safety improvements along SR 3/US 41/Northside Drive from 1-75 northward to Arden Road. The existing roadway consists of three lanes. The center lane of the three-lane system is a reversible lane controlled by overhead electronic lane indicators. As recommended in a previous traffic study, this project proposes to remove the reversible lane system and convert the existing center reversible lane to a two-way left turn lane. At each signalized intersection, with the exception of Collier Road, the center lane will be utilized as an exclusive left turn lane. Between 1-75 and Collier Road, the three lanes are proposed to be converted to one northbound and two southbound lanes. A right turn lane is proposed from northbound Northside Drive to eastbound Collier Road. Left turns will not be permitted from northbound Northside Drive. Left turns from southbound Northside Drive to eastbound Collier Road will not be permitted during the morning rush hours.

Sidewalks are proposed along the west side of Northside Drive from 1-75 to Wesley Drive. Sidewalks are proposed along the east side of Northside Drive from Collier Road to Bobby Jones Golf Course. A multi-use path continues the pedestrian access on the east side of Northside Drive within the limits of Bobby Jones Golf Course. The multi-use path begins at the driveway entrance to the golf course and extends northward to Peachtree Creek. The multi-use path includes some fencing for golf ball protection and a covered wooden bridge. Minor modifications are proposed at the intersection of Northside Drive and Peachtree Battle Avenue. The existing signals along Northside Drive at the intersections of Collier Road, Woodward Way, Peachtree Battle Avenue, West Wesley Road, and Arden Road will be upgraded. Paving and striping along Northside Drive past Arden Road is also proposed. The total project length is approximately 2.2 miles.

The existing typical section along Northside Drive includes two 10-foot travel lanes with granite curb and a 10-foot reversible lane in the center. The proposed typical section includes two 10-foot travel lanes with a 10-foot center two-way left turn lane/exclusive left turn lane, 14foot urban shoulder (granite curb) with five-foot sidewalk along some locations as described above. The existing sidewalk and shoulders would be retained from Woodward Way to Arden Road.
