In compliance with Section 106 if the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-005-2(15), Lamar/Monroe County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.
This project consists of adding two eastbound passing lanes, one westbound passing lane, and one center turn lane between Barnesville and Forsyth along US 41/SR 18. The proposed typical section of the passing lanes would consist: three 12 ft travel lanes with 2 ft paved shoulders and 8 ft grassed shoulders. The proposed typical section of the center turn lane would consist of two 12 ft travel lanes separated by a 13.7 ft center turn lane with curb and gutter. The proposed right-of-way would be approximately 100 ft. Revised studies for this project have changed the location of two previously surveyed sediment basins next to Cole Creek in Lamar County.
An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based an the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
