Abstract

Project STP-2584(9) consists of intersection improvements along SR 20 in Walton County, Georgia. The intersection improvements are located at Moon Road, Centerhill Church Road, Centerville-Rosebud Road, and McCullers Road where they intersect with SR 20. At each intersection the 2-lane roadway will be widened to 5 lanes beginning south of Sharon Church Road and transition into a one-way pair north of Overlook Drive. In addition, a new location section has been added north of the SR 20/Huntington Drive intersection. This new location segment travels in a northeasterly direction and terminates at Publix Drive. The new location segment will require 125 feet of right-of-way for 1000 feet. The existing right-of-way for SR 20 is 80 feet. Required right-ofway varies with a maximum of 150 additional feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
