Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-1111(7), in Catoosa County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially; those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of 4ny archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. STP- 1111(7) would widen and reconstruct SR 146/Cloud Springs Road beginning approximately 500' west of Lakeview Drive and continuing east to the 1-75 southbound ramps. Existing right-of-way on SR 146/Cloud Springs toad varies from approximately 50'-60'. with required right-of-way varying from 0'250'. The initial survey for the project was conducted by Eric Duff of the Department in November of 1995: A reevaluation of this project area was done by Paul McIntosh in June of 2004 and by Pamela Johnson in December of 2006. In this reevaluation, an additional proposed 60' permanent and 20' temporary easement for the relocation of Colonial Pipeline's utility has been added to the project APE. An archaeological survey consistent with the project revisions was conducted in the project area. An archaeological survey (Level it) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Office. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
