Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects HPP-3717-00(400) and CSHPP-0007-00(682), Houston County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would widen and reconstruct 2.38 miles of Corder Road from SR 247C/Watson Boulevard to approximately 1,000 feet north of Richard B. Russell Parkway in Houston County. The existing roadway consists of variable width lanes on 60 to 80 feet of right-of-way. The proposed improvements to Corder Road would include the addition of four 12-foot lanes with a 14-foot flush median, 4-foot bike lanes, 5-foot sidewalks, and 12-foot urban shoulders. Proposed right-of-way on Corder Road would be 100-125 feet. This reevaluation was concerned with the expansion of two existing culverts as well as the realignment of County Road 442/Leverett Road approximately 200 feet to the south on new location to intersect Corder Road at Arrowhead Trail. Project CSHPP-0007-00(682) has been added solely as a funding source. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
