Abstract

In June 2007, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Tara Boulevard Park and Ride Facility project area. The proposed Tara Boulevard Park and Ride lot would consist of a new parking lot on 8.4 acres of land at the corner of Tara Boulevard and Smith Street in south-central Clayton County. The proposed lot would be located approximately four miles south of the Tara Boulevard/Interstate (I) 75 junction and would have approximately 574 parking spaces. Access is planned to the lot from Tara Boulevard, Smith Street and Fayetteville Road. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that ten previously identified archaeological sites are located within a one kilometer radius of the project area; none are in the APE. No archaeological sites were identified during the survey. Based on the results of the survey, EPEI recommends that no further archaeological work be undertaken at this location; clearance for construction is recommended.
