Abstract

The proposed project, Phase I Archaeological Survey of SR 21 at SR 275 Intersection Improvements, Effingham County, Georgia Project Description GDOT Project CSSFT-0008-00(062), PI 0008062, would improve the intersection of SR 21 at SR 275/Rahn Station Road in Effingham County, Georgia. The proposed project would widen SR 275/Rahn Station Road to add left turn lanes in both directions. Additionally, a right turn lane would be added on eastbound Rahn Station Road and the right turn lane on westbound SR 275 would be improved to provide adequate storage. SR 275/Rahn Station Road would be realigned in order to meet current design criteria. A curve would be added to Rahn Station Road in order to correct the skew in the existing intersection with SR 21. SR 275 would be realigned to the north to tie into the Rahn Station Road and SR 21 intersection. The project would also upgrade the traffic signal at the intersection in order to provide phases for the left turn movements from SR 275/Rahn Station Road onto SR 21. The existing SR 21 is a four-lane (12-foot travel lanes) divided roadway. SR 21 contains a left and right turn lane in each direction with rural shoulders. The proposed SR 21 would maintain the existing typical section, with minor re-striping of median nose and stop bars to accommodate the realignment of SR 275/Rahn Station Road. The existing and proposed right-of-way along SR 21 is approximately 180 feet. The existing SR 275/Rahn Station Road contains two 12-foot travels lanes with grassed shoulders. The right-of-way ranges from 80 to 90 feet. The proposed SR 275/Rahn Station Road would contain two 12-foot travel lanes, a 12-foot left and right turn lane for each leg of the intersection, and 10-foot shoulders (6.5 feet paved and 3.5 feet grassed). The proposed right-of-way would range from 80 to 160 feet. The increased right-of-way is required in order to realign SR 275/Rahn Station Road.
