Abstract

The Centex Company wishes to construct a housing subdivision on a ca. 53 ha (130 ac) tract of land that straddles State Route 74 at Flat Creek, about 2.4 km northwest of Starrs Mill, in southwestern Fayette County. The development of the tract will involve effects to wetlands and as a result a Section 404 permit was required from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District. Because a federal permit is required, an intensive archeological survey was conducted in order to comply with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended). The survey located and documented ten archeological sites. In regard to site significance, we recommend that none of the ten sites documented by the survey are eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The four historic and six prehistoric period sites do not retain sufficient integrity and research potential to warrant further archeological investigation. The extensive agriculture on the tract, especially terracing, has seriously compromised the integrity of the prehistoric sites. Also, these sites have such sparse artifact distributions that research potential is extremely doubtful. The historic period sites are poorly preserved examples of a very common site type and offer no further research potential.
