Abstract

The proposed Godfrey Land Exchange Project includes approximately 182 acres of National Forest land adjacent to Godfrey Highway in Compartment 163, Putnam County, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The project area was surveyed at three different times; first, in 1982 by Barrett and Wynn (field notes only); second in 1990 by Price and Wood (Project #90GA08-02); and third in April 2000 by the author Jill Harrell (Project # 2000-08-0 1) (Figure 3 ). In total, six sites were recorded within the project area. In addition, one isolated find was located. All six sites and the one isolated find are ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is recommended that this land exchange proceed as planned. This project will have no effect on any significant historic properties. This report is directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic, in complaince with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended; the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer; and NEPA.
