Abstract

During February 2007, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed corridor for the Turner Hill Road Improvements project. The project corridor is located in DeKalb County, Georgia, and is approximately 1.1 miles in length. The maximum width of the corridor does not exceed 150 feet (ft). The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites in the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that three previously identified archaeological sites had been reported in the APE. No additional work was undertaken at their locations. During the course of the investigations, three new archaeological sites were recorded in the APE. Based on the results of the survey, EPEI recommends that no further archaeological work be undertaken in the proposed APE. Clearance for construction is recommended.
