Abstract

In November of 2006, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted a Phase I archeological survey of approximately 6.1 km (3.8 mi) of a proposed 115 kV transmission line corridor and 4.4 ha (11 ac) of a switching station tract in northwestern Douglas County, Georgia. From the north the proposed line will begin at an existing substation on Conners Road and end at the proposed switching station near Post Road. Surface exposure was poor, except in portions of an existing transmission line. Consequently, the archeological survey primarily relied on shovel testing to detect sites. For the most part, shovel tests were placed in one transect along the proposed centerline. Once a site was detected, it was investigated with more shovel tests along the corridor length at 10 or 20 m intervals (depending on the anticipated size of the site) and with one or more perpendicular transects of shovel tests to explore site width. We discovered and recorded one archeological site. Due to severe disturbance caused by construction of a previous transmission line and erosion, and low research potential, we recommend that this site is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
