Abstract

An intensive Phase I archaeological assessment was conducted by PBS&J of the proposed Telfair Tower Realignment Project. This project consists of a new road corridor, approximately 60 meters (200 feet) wide, that splits off from US 441/SR 31 to the east, around the Telfair County Lookout/Fire Tower. The proposed road corridor extends about 1,052 meters (3,450 feet) before merging back into US 441/SR 31. A small, 50 foot (15 meter) wide spur splits to the west of US 441/SR 31, and merges into a small dirt road running west. The purpose of the proposed road realignment is to minimize impacts to the National Register eligible Telfair County Lookout/Fire Tower due to the widening of US 441/SR 31. The APE for this project is considered to be the area within the boundaries of the proposed project corridor, which is about 1,052 meters (3,450 feet) long. The project corridor consists of a new road alignment that diverges from US 441 /SR 31 about 1,500 feet (460 meters) south of the Telfair County Lookout/Fire Tower, and runs along the east side of US 441/SR 31, gently arcing to avoid the fire tower on the east side, and reconnecting to US 441/SR 31 about 460 meters (1,500 feet) north of the tower. The proposed corridor is about 60 meters (200 feet) wide. In addition, a small spur about 15 meters (50 feet) wide branches from the west side of the proposed corridor, south of the fire tower, crosses US 441/SR 31 and joins with a small dirt road running to the west.
