Abstract

An intensive Phase I archaeological assessment was recently conducted by PBS&J of the proposed Falcons Interchange project, which consists of a new four lane road corridor, approximately 30 meters wide (100 feet), extending northwest from the intersection of Martin Road and the Atlanta Highway to the intersection of H.F. Reed Industrial and Thurmond Tanner Roads. Four proposed exit/entrance ramps are also proposed, each measuring approximately 15 meters (50 feet) wide. The ramps extend northeast and southwest of the main project corridor and ultimately connect to 1-985. One previously recorded archaeological site was identified in the project area. This site is recommended as ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and is recorded as eroded and razed. Furthermore, it is not located in a high impact portion of the project corridor. Systematic shovel tests at 30-meter intervals along parallel transects within the main road corridor and the right of way along existing paved roads, single transects of shovel tests at 30-meter intervals along the proposed exit/entrance ramps, and an intensive investigation of exposed surfaces did not result in the identification of any new archaeological sites within the project area.
