Abstract

This report presents the findings of the Phase I Archaeological Survey of the East Segment of the expansion of SR 96 in Twiggs County, Georgia. The area surveyed consisted of a corridor of new rightof--way oriented along the existing path of SR 96. The corridor extended along SR 96 from a point approximately 0.4 miles north of the intersection with Interstate 16 to a point west of the intersection of SR 96 and SR 87, totaling approximately 8.3 miles in length. The width of the required right-of-way was variable, fluctuating between 15 meters (50 ft) and 90 meters (300 ft) from the existing centerline of SR 96. A total of 1,039 shovel test pits were investigated at a 30meter (100-ft) interval along the corridor, with an additional 112 shovel test pits excavated at a 15meter (50-ft) interval.
