Abstract

During January 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed location for the Sardis Road Connector. The project is located between State Route (SR) 53 to the south and SR 60 to the north in Hall County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to archaeological resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that there are three previously identified archaeological sites within a one kilometer (km) radius of the project area. The proposed project would have no effect on these sites since they are outside the APE of the present undertaking. During the course of the current investigation, one archaeological site, was identified. The Site is an artifact scatter associated with an agricultural outbuilding. Because the site extends beyond the project boundary the site is recommended as of unknown eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The portion of the site within the project corridor is heavily disturbed, and does not have the potential to provide additional significant archaeological data. No further work is necessary at its location and clearance for construction is recommended for the project's APE as currently designed.
