Abstract

From May 18 to May 24, 1999, TRC Garrow carried out a cultural resource survey on a tract bordering the Chattahoochee River in Douglas County, Georgia, which is slated for development by New Manchester, L.L.C. The cultural resource survey sought to identify archaeological and architectural sites within the non-wooded tract bounded by Riverside Drive on the north, Sweetwater Creek on the east, the Chattahoochee River on the south, and an imaginary line between the road and the river located 3,000 feet southwest along the river from the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Sweetwater Creek. The project area encompasses approximately 100 acres along the Chattahoochee River. Low areas within the floodplain, unlikely to have supported human occupation, were not surveyed. Three previously recorded sites were located with the project area: 9DO7, 9DO11, and 9DO24. Each was relocated during the survey, with some changes in site boundaries recorded. In addition to the three previously recorded sites, another site (9DO107) was located during the survey. 9DO11, 9DO24, and 9DO107 are recommended as potentially eligible for the NRHP, and should be avoided or subjected to archaeological testing before construction is to proceed. 9DO7 was not evaluated since the main site area lies outside of the project area, in the wooded area adjacent to Sweetwater Creek at its confluence with the Chattahoochee River. No special measures need be taken to avoid damage to 9DO7 unless the project area is modified to extend into the wooded tract, in which case further archaeological survey would be necessary.
