Abstract

In 2006, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Office of Environment/ Location, through the firm of Greenhorne and O'Mara (G&O), contracted with Brockington and Associates, Inc., (Brockington) to conduct Phase III data recovery investigations at 9HY321 in Henry County, Georgia. The archaeological data recovery investigations were part of the mitigation of adverse effects for the proposed State Route (SR) 20 bridge replacement over Walnut Creek, located approximately 6.0 km (3.7 miles) northeast of McDonough, Georgia. Fieldwork was conducted from September 4 to 18, 2006, and from February 19 to 23, 2007. The APE for the proposed bridge replacement is defined as encompassing a corridor 594 meters (1,950 feet) in length and approximately 46 meters (150 feet) in width to either side of the centerline of a proposed detour route. Phase III investigations were completed in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (16 USC 470). The report discusses the research questions, field and laboratory methods, environmental and cultural contexts, as well as the results of field investigation and artifact and data analysis. An interpretative chapter summarizes the results of data recovery efforts, addressing the principal questions outlined in the research design.
