Abstract

In May 2007, Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive, Phase I archeological survey of four tracts of U.S. Forest land that are proposed to be transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to the Rabun County Board of Education, the Rabun County Board of Commissioners and the Economic Development Authority of Rabun County. This survey (Gresham 2007) discovered eight sites, one of which was recommended as potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The county wishes to acquire this tract from the U.S. Forest Service to serve as an environmental buffer to their landfill. Federal regulations require a definitive assessment of site significance for sites within tracts that are passing out of federal ownership. The testing took place in May of 2008 and consisted of the excavation of seven more shovel tests and four 1 x 2 m test units placed throughout the site. The test units revealed that the site consists of shallow deposits of rather sparse artifactual remains. The testing encountered no features, no culturally diagnostic artifacts and very little pottery. We recommend no further work at the site.
